Ballard is a neighborhood conveniently located ten minutes North of downtown Seattle in King County. It is an area made up of mostly traditional bungalow and craftsman style homes. However, of late there has been much renewal of downtown with new condominium projects under construction. Ballard offers many and different housing opportunities from single family craftsman/bungalow style and newer single family contemporary style homes to rental houses and apartments. Famous Fishermans Terminal is located just South of the downtown area and many Alaskan and Washington commercial fisherman call this home and use this facility as their base of operations. Fresh seafood can be bought off the boat, straight from the fishermen, in season. The Hiram M. Chittenden, or Ballard Locks as they are locally known, are also located here where boats and shipping travel to and from Lake Union and the Puget Sound. The Woodland Park Zoo is located just up the hill about five to ten minutes East of the downtown area on Phinney Ridge. The Nordic Heritage Museum is located in Ballard as well. Golden Gardens Park is located about five minutes NW of the downtown area and is a great place for a picnic or walk along the sandy beach. The park is located next to the Shilshole Bay Marina.
Shopping is convenient and is comprised of grocery stores such as Safeway, QFC, and the Ballard Market as well as small downtown shops offering goods from clothing to kitchen wares to books. Ballard offers numerous fine dinning opportunities as well with the likes of Volterra, Market Street Grill, Le Gourmand and Chinooks to name just a couple.
Education consists of private and public schools and range from kindergarten and elementary to high school grades. College education is close to Ballard with Seattle Pacific University and the University of Washington a ten minute drive and twenty minute drive respectively. Bastyr University is located in Kenmor approximately 25 minutes from the Ballard downtown area.

P.S. With all the new condo projects nearing completion there is really a wide variety of homes to choose from. And Ballard is a great location if you'd like to be close to downtown Seattle but still want that small home town feel. Get out and walk Ballard, you'll love it's quaint yesteryear feel even though it's undergoing a modern renewal.
